Why diets, exercise and medication barely help with lipedema, and what actually brings relief.

How, after years of pain, shame and wrong diagnoses, I finally understood what was happening to my body, and what really helps me feel lighter.

Before, week 1 and week 7 comparison

Women with lipedema know how helpless you can feel, and how often you are not taken seriously.

The legs hurt, feel heavy, and swell more and more as the day goes on. No matter how much you move or how healthy you eat, the stubborn fat tissue stays. And with it: pressure, tightness, bruises out of nowhere.

Some notice the first changes after a pregnancy. Others during puberty or in menopause. Always when hormones go wild.

For many it starts gradually. Trousers feel tight. The legs no longer match the rest of the body. And suddenly you hear: "You are simply overweight."

But that is not true. And you can feel it.

Because lipedema is more than a cosmetic problem. It hurts, in the body and in the soul.

Especially in summer, when the sun comes out and skirts or shorts suddenly become an act of courage. When other people's eyes land on the legs (or arms) you would rather hide, because they simply look "wrong".

And the most frustrating part: hardly anyone really understands what is happening inside your own body. Neither diets nor exercise help. And often what remains is the feeling of being at its mercy.

At some point I had enough. I started researching myself, read studies, talked to experts and other women affected, and for the first time I understood what lipedema really is.

Along the way I came across 3 steps that became the turning point for me. They still help me today to relieve my tissue, ease the pain and finally feel lighter again.

These are exactly the 3 steps I want to share with you today.

Before and after wearing compression leggings

My story with lipedema

Hello, I am Andrea Steinauer, and I know the symptoms described above all too well.

For years I suffered from pain and swelling in my legs, without knowing why. Sometimes I was told I was simply unfit. Other times that it was water retention. But none of that explained why my legs kept getting thicker while my upper body stayed completely normal.

I was ashamed. Of my figure, of my compression stockings, of the feeling of not being "normal".

Summer was especially bad. Skirts or shorts? Unthinkable. Instead I wrapped myself in long, loose clothing, and had long since swapped my sandals for closed shoes, even though those barely fit any more with the swelling.

In the evening my legs were often so heavy and tight that I could hardly fall asleep. And the bruises. Just there, without bumping into anything, without a reason.

I tried a lot: diets, lymphatic drainage, nettle tea, cold showers, even diuretic medication that the doctor prescribed. But nothing really helped. The pain stayed. The thick legs too. And with them the feeling that nobody really understands what is actually happening in my body.

I will not even start on the side effects and the chemicals in the medication.

Until one day I decided to take the matter into my own hands.

Woman researching lipedema at her laptop

After years of frustration I made a decisive discovery

I came across a holistic approach in my research that for the first time gave me the feeling: I can do something myself.

No empty promise. No crash diet. No pills that pump the body full of chemicals and only suppress the problem.

Instead an interplay of three natural measures, scientifically grounded and tuned specifically to the particular challenges of lipedema.

What I also learned along the way: why conventional diuretics do not help with lipedema, and which plant based active ingredients can, according to studies, actually bring relief.

If you recognize yourself in my story, if you feel that something is wrong with your body but nobody takes you seriously, then please read this article to the end.

Over the past years I have spent countless hours reading, learning and trying things out. And I sincerely hope my experience helps you feel comfortable in your body again.

So how did I come to this discovery?

I first noticed something after my second pregnancy. My legs suddenly felt different, heavier, tighter. The skin was sensitive to pressure, I got bruises without bumping into anything.

At first I thought it was the home office: little movement, a lot of sitting, not exactly the healthiest diet. And yes, it was summer. Many people tend to get swollen legs then.

My husband said: "Do not stress about it, it will go away on its own."

But it did not. On the contrary.

In midsummer I could barely make out my ankles any more. The thighs looked thicker, completely out of proportion to the rest of my body. My trousers suddenly did not fit, even though I had actually lost a little around the stomach.

I started with home remedies: nettle tea, draining foods, cold showers. And yes, in the short term it did a little. But as soon as I stopped, everything was back to how it was. Sometimes even worse.

What really worried me though was the pain. My legs hurt so much in the evening that I could hardly sleep. And in the morning my ankles were so tender that every step became torture.

I tried lymphatic drainage, put my legs up, bought expensive creams for "heavy legs". But no matter what I did, the feeling stayed: this is more than just water. Something is fundamentally wrong here.

Looking back, that was the moment I started to question everything. Because this was not a passing summer problem, this was a chronic condition. And I finally wanted to understand what was really happening in my body.

Swollen lower leg with lipedema

So I dragged myself through spring 2021. Desperation had by then turned into something like resignation.

In winter it was a bit more bearable. The pain was not quite so bad, and long trousers hid a lot. I began to somehow accept my thick, aching legs as part of me. Not out of conviction, more out of exhaustion.

But I knew: the next summer is coming. And with it that shame again. The looks. The question of what is wrong with me.

I wanted to wear summer dresses carefree again. Not have to apologize for my figure. Just barefoot in sandals, without constantly thinking about my legs.

So I decided to make one last attempt: I went to the doctor. Because for me it was clear, it cannot go on like this. I did not want to spend more months in a body that felt wrong and foreign.

The doctor's visit did take me a step further. But not without detours. And not without the usual sentences I had long stopped wanting to hear.

Hands pressing on a swollen leg

The first doctor's visit

So I went to my doctor with clear expectations. Some tablet would fix it, maybe draining, maybe painkilling. The main thing: finally improvement.

But it was not that simple.

First it had to be ruled out that a serious illness was behind my symptoms, such as a weakness of the heart, liver or kidney, or even a thrombosis. Because all of these conditions can also cause swelling in the legs, and in those cases water tablets under medical supervision are sometimes genuinely necessary.

*Please note: so my urgent advice here too: if you have similar symptoms, do get thoroughly examined. That is the only way to rule out an organ disease behind the symptoms.

Fortunately none of that came up in my case.

The doctor was quickly certain: "Probably a combination of excess weight, poor diet and lack of exercise."

He prescribed me diuretics, draining medication, which I was supposed to take daily to ease the swelling.

But inside I already knew in that moment: that is not the solution. Because my problem sat deeper. It was more than just water. More than just weight. I could feel it, in my legs, in my connective tissue, in every aching step.

Still, I wanted to give the tablets a chance.

Blister pack of tablets and a glass of water

The problem with the tablets

The tablets worked surprisingly fast at first. After just one day my legs felt lighter, exactly what I had hoped for.

But then came the side effects: headaches, tiredness, cramps. And every time I stopped taking the tablets, the water was immediately back. Sometimes even worse than before.

I increased the dose, but my body got used to it. The effect wore off, the side effects increased.

And above all: the tablets did not solve my actual problem at all. My legs were less swollen in the short term, but the tight feeling, the dents, the pain and the bruises stayed.

By then at the latest it was clear to me: these are not classic water retention. And I need a different solution.

If none of this helps, a lipedema could also be behind it.

The last doctor's visit

It was already May, and I was running out of time. Outside it was slowly getting warmer, and I knew my legs would swell even more at higher temperatures.

More swelling meant more pain. More frustration. And even less quality of life.

The tablets barely worked any more, even though I had by then doubled the dose.

So I went to my doctor one last time. I wanted to know whether there were other options, other active ingredients, better tablets, anything. After all, I did not have an organ weakness. Surely there had to be a solution?

I made clear to her how draining the situation was for me, physically and mentally.

And after some hesitation she finally said a sentence that I could not get out of my head:

"If none of this helps, a lipedema could also be behind it."

I had never heard the term before. But it would not let me go.

She briefly explained what it is about, and that it is a fat distribution disorder that cannot be treated with classic draining therapies.

At home I started researching immediately. And what I found finally explained everything.

Lipedema symptoms, external and internal

What exactly is lipedema?

When I first heard the term "lipedema", I honestly did not know what it was.

That is why I have looked into it intensively over the past years: read studies and articles, exchanged with experts and naturopaths, and talked with women affected.

I thought of cellulite or simply stubborn fat, but lipedema is something completely different.

Lipedema is a chronic fat distribution disorder in which fat tissue increases unevenly, above all on the legs, hips and sometimes also the arms.

Typical for it: the affected areas are often sensitive to pressure, painful, prone to bruising and swell noticeably over the course of the day.

Many women affected describe their legs as "foreign", they simply no longer match the rest of the body.

In addition, water retention is a side effect of lipedema. Which makes the problem even worse.

And the worst part: neither exercise nor diets help against this fat. It stays, no matter how hard you try.

The exact causes are not yet fully understood, but hormonal changes (for example in puberty, after pregnancy or in menopause) play a big role. A genetic predisposition also seems to be involved for many women.

Even so, lipedema is still recognized far too late, or wrongly dismissed as excess weight. Yet it is a real medical problem that can strongly affect not only appearance but also quality of life.

The earlier you do something, the better you can influence how it develops.

The dangers of lipedema

For a long time I thought it was only a cosmetic problem. Thick legs, that is all. Maybe some water. Maybe predisposition.

But the deeper I looked into the topic, the clearer it became: an untreated lipedema can have serious consequences, physically and emotionally.

What stuck with me most:

Lipo-lymphedema, the end stage

When the lymphatic system is permanently overwhelmed, it is damaged irreparably. The legs swell grotesquely, the contours disappear, open wounds develop, and in the end there is the threat of being confined to a wheelchair and needing care.

Tissue hardening and fibrosis

The soft fat tissue turns into board hard, scarred tissue through chronic inflammation. Movement becomes torture. Pain becomes permanent. Many lose their ability to work.

Recurring infections

The tight skin tears open, bacteria get in. Erysipelas, fever and sepsis follow, along with years of antibiotics and the consequences that brings.

Social isolation and depression

Anyone who is ashamed of their own body withdraws. Relationships break down, work suffers, friendships are lost, and often all that remains is the feeling of being alone.

Serious secondary illnesses from lack of movement

When every step hurts, at some point you stop moving altogether. The result: diabetes, high blood pressure, thrombosis, fatty liver, all the way to multiple organ failure.

Kidney damage from the wrong kind of draining

Many try desperately to fight lipedema with water tablets. But that puts a massive strain on the kidneys, and in the worst case there is the threat of dialysis or a kidney transplant.

I am not saying this to frighten anyone. I am saying it because I myself thought for far too long that it was "not that bad".

Today I know: the earlier you do something, the better you can influence how it develops.

The vicious circle of lipedema

Lipedema is not simply a fat distribution disorder, it is a complex, chronic inflammatory process that keeps escalating.

Over the years, through my research and conversations with experts, I was able to summarize the 3 main problems and causes of lipedema.

Women affected often end up in a painful vicious circle of swelling, pressure, hardening and exhaustion.

1.Pain and inflammation

A kind of permanent fire rages in lipedema tissue. Small "inflammation factories" constantly release substances such as TNF-α and IL-6, which make nerves oversensitive and attack the blood vessels.

The result: even light touches can trigger stabbing pain, bruises appear without any external cause, the skin burns, feels tight and irritated. Swelling often starts in the morning and builds through the day to the unbearable.

2.Lymph congestion, when the tissue "drowns"

The lipedema tissue compresses the lymphatic system, while at the same time the inflammation produces more and more fluid. Like a blocked drain, everything backs up.

This shows in massive swelling, so called "column legs", a feeling of heaviness as if carrying lead weights, and daily weight swings of several kilos, purely from water.

3.Tissue hardening and fibrosis

If the fluid stays in the tissue, its structure changes. The soft fat tissue becomes hard, knotty and scarred, a process doctors call fibrosis.

Hardened tissue presses on nerves (more pain), blocks the lymph drainage (more water), restricts mobility and leads to chronic exhaustion.

Many women affected describe the feeling of being "locked in" in their own body, as if in an inner armour that makes every movement harder.

Without the right support this cycle keeps getting faster. What begins with "only" a feeling of tightness can lead into a spiral of pain, isolation and serious secondary illnesses.

The vicious circle of lipedema

...and how to break the vicious circle

The earlier you interrupt the cycle of inflammation, lymph congestion and tissue hardening, the better. Because even though lipedema itself is not curable, its symptoms can be eased in a targeted way.

That does not need aggressive medication, but natural support that starts in the right places: where the body is overwhelmed.

Step 1:Activate circulation, gently, regularly, as part of everyday life

When tissue hurts, many people withdraw. But rhythmic, joint friendly movement such as walking or cycling at low intensity promotes microcirculation and can reduce the feeling of heaviness.

Step 2:Stimulate lymph flow, avoid congestion

With lipedema, fluid congestion in the tissue plays a big role. What brings relief: raising the legs, drinking enough, and the most effective of all, compression supported everyday movement. Light pressure on the legs stimulates lymph flow in a targeted way. The goal: to "open pathways" for the lymphatic system, so that less pressure and less tightness build up.

Step 3:Strengthen and calm the tissue, from inside and outside

Chronic pressure irritates connective tissue. Sleep, stress reduction and a balanced diet help, for example. We all know that already.

But according to studies the biggest effect comes from fascia friendly micro movements and flat, even support from outside that turns micro movements into massage. That way the tissue can become "calmer", pressure sensitivity drops, and water retention and bruises can subjectively occur less often.

Note: it is not about "training harder" or "eating less", but about intelligent relief. Promote circulation, guide lymph flow, protect tissue.

I finally find the life changing solution

After all the research I finally knew what can really help against my symptoms: promote circulation, stimulate lymph flow and protect the sensitive tissue.

But it was also clear to me: I could not manage that alone. Daily exercise, compression and micro massage, how was I supposed to fit all that in?

I needed something that supports me in everyday life, while walking, sitting, working, simply always. And I did not want to wait any longer.

So I typed into Google: "compression wear", "promote circulation while walking", "support lymph flow everyday".

Of course I had also seen compression stockings, but they seemed old fashioned, uncomfortable and absolutely not something I would wear day to day. On top of that they only help with smaller water retention, which has nothing to do with lipedema.

After searching further I came across something that immediately caught my interest: the CelluFlex™ 3D compression leggings from the Swiss company COREEX.

Search result for COREEX CelluFlex

The first impression alone made me curious: a specially developed pair of leggings that supports circulation with graduated compression, turns every movement into a gentle micro massage through sewn in 3D kinesiology lines, and wraps the sensitive tissue like a protective shield.

When I then also read the experience reports from other women, many with the same symptoms as me, I was convinced. That was exactly the support I had been looking for all that time.

How the CelluFlex™ 3D compression leggings work

What convinced me straight away: the CelluFlex™ 3D compression leggings combine several working principles in a single piece of clothing. I do not have to waste money in expensive clinics or swallow 3 tablets every day. The leggings combine medicine with science and comfort.

Let me list the benefits and how it works so it makes more sense to you, because at the beginning it confused me quite a bit. A pair of leggings? How is that supposed to help...

1.Targeted compression zones

from ankle to hip promote circulation and activate lymph flow. That relieves heavy legs, reduces swelling and prevents water build up.

2.3D powerlines and kinesiology bands

turn every movement, even sitting or walking, into a gentle micro massage of the tissue. This stimulates metabolism, the muscles work more actively and you burn up to 3 times more calories in everyday life.

3.3D structure in the material

smooths the skin surface, massages the connective tissue and can reduce visible cellulite. At the same time the flat stability protects the sensitive lipedema tissue from additional pressure and irritation.

The result? My legs feel lighter, more relaxed and more alive, while at the same time I get a nicer figure and smoother skin. All without having to change your daily routine: simply put them on, feel good, benefit.

For the first time in years I liked seeing myself in the mirror again.

My self test with the CelluFlex™ leggings begins

In May, after my last conversation with the doctor, it was clear to me: my symptoms were not "excess weight", it was lipedema. And I finally needed something that supports my tissue daily, instead of only covering symptoms up in the short term.

Honestly, I was skeptical when I ordered the CelluFlex™ 3D compression leggings. I had so many disappointments behind me, from creams to massages to uncomfortable compression stockings.

But this time it felt different straight away: pleasant, supportive, without constricting.

After the first few days I already noticed that my legs were lighter in the evening and that the tight feeling was easing.

With every week more movement came into my everyday life: less pressure pain, less swelling, more energy. I could stand for longer without immediately feeling like my legs were about to burst.

And the best part? For the first time in years I liked seeing myself in the mirror again, with a figure that feels firmer, lighter and more shaped.

Today the CelluFlex™ leggings are a fixed part of my everyday life, because they give me back what I missed for so long: lightness, confidence and control over my body.
